BROOKLYN, New York — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team won their second straight match Saturday morning (Aug. 31) as the defeated the New Jersey Institute of Technology 3-1. The scores of the sets were 25-23, 24-26, 25-8 and 25-15.
The Hawks and NJIT played an even match through two sets. Both teams won one set and scored 49 total points. After the break following the second set, Eastern Shore turned the tide of the match.
With the score standing at 10-6, Hawks senior Ivana Blazevic (Zagreb, Croatia) had a kill that started a run of six straight points for the squad. Later on in the set, their lead stood at 17-8 and sophomore Alexis Lee (Wilmington, Delaware) would get one of her game-high 17 kills to start an 8-0 run to conclude the set. Maryland Eastern Shore carried that momentum into the final set of the match and cruised to a 25-15 win.
Other than Lee, the Hawks had two other players with double figures in kills. Junior Tatjana Trifkovic (Belgrade, Serbia) had 14 and freshman Sydney Morris (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada) finished with 10. Blazevic continued her strong play in the tournament with 45 assists, six aces and five blocks. Sophomore Stella Johnson (Newport News, Virginia) led the team with 11 digs.
The Shore will conclude their play in the St. Francis Brooklyn Tournament tonight (Aug. 31) at 7 p.m. against the host Terriors.
