Hawks Drop Two on Day One of Weekend Tournament

Powell Sees Improvement from Previous Games

SPARTANBURG, South Carolina — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team fell to the University of Massachusetts and the University of South Carolina-Upstate on Friday (Feb. 14) in day one of the Spartan Classic Tournament.

UMass won 11-0 and USC-Upstate won 8-0. Even with the tough scores that went against the Hawks, head coach Karla Powell still saw things that she was proud of.

"These games were a great improvement for us as I saw us put the ball in play at the plate and the pitchers worked well at getting ahead in the count," Powell said. "We had a much better pitching performance today by being able to get the ball in play; however, we did make too many mistakes in the field and that hurt us."

Sophomore Kaylyn Sterling (Half Moon Bay, California) and junior Jordan Robinson (Gaithersburg, Maryland) each got a hit in the team's game against UMass. Junior Nasya Goodman (Willingboro, New Jersey) pitched a complete game versus USC-Upstate and tossed five strikeouts.

The Shore will be back in action tomorrow (Feb. 15) against the University of Buffalo at 11 a.m. in day two of the Spartan Classic.
