Box Score 2 EMMITSBURG, Maryland — It was a full on team effort for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team in a two-game sweep at Mount St. Mary's (Md.) on Friday (Feb. 28), taking down the Mountaineers 4-0 and 7-0 in Emmitsburg.
"We're making every attempt to turn this corner and quite honestly the guys played very good baseball today," head coach
Brian Hollamon said. "The biggest key is the guys coming in pitching. We threw strikes, we didn't give up free bases and with that being said, offensively we got out there – got some guys on, scored some guys, hit some home runs, put some pressure on them."
Senior
Dwayne Marshall (Piscataway, New Jersey) started game one and was a lockdown pitcher over seven innings, striking out seven to two walks and three hits. The Seton Hall Prep alum only found himself in a jam in his final two innings of work before getting out of them with a strikeout and flyout, keeping his stat sheet clean and putting himself in line for the win.
"He was very efficient for the first six innings," Hollamon said. "From one through six he was efficient, he was cruising."
The Hawks exploded in the fourth inning thanks to a leadoff walk by
Dillon Oxyer (Pasadena, Maryland) before stealing second and
Brian Cordell (Pasadena, Maryland) walked immediately after. Breaking things open, senior
Matt Smith (Salisbury, Maryland) knocked a two-run double to drive in the Pasadena boys to give The Shore the lead.
With runners on the corners, catcher
Ryan Howe (Lancaster, Pennsylvania) hit into a fielder's choice, but was able to score
Blake Coleman (Woodbridge, Virginia) from third to stretch the lead to three.
Wanting to keep the pressure on and add an insurance run, Smith led off the eighth with a no-doubt home run to right center for a 4-0 Hawks lead.
"The double he hit that drove in two runs, that was the best one," Hollamon said "It gave him a little bit of confidence and (he) hit a couple out of the ballpark. The best one was the double that scored two runs and kind of kick started the whole day."
Picking up where he left off after pitching four scoreless against the University of Albany on Feb. 23, junior
Evan Nibblett (Seaford, Delaware) pitched two clean innings with a strikeout.
Rolling after the second win of the season, the Hawks kept the momentum going in game two by spotting starter
Marty Tolson, Jr. (Stafford, Virginia) a six-run lead before the senior could even reach the mound.
Drawing the first of his two walks on the day,
Andrew Revels' (Annapolis, Maryland) almost instantly paid off as he was driven in by a Cordell single after being advanced to third by Oxyer. With two on, Smith showed his strength again with a three-run homer to center, giving him his sixth RBI of the day and the Hawks a 4-0 lead.
"We started that game off with guys getting on base and we were moving runners around," Hollamon said. "Got some big pops and put us up 6-0."
Getting in on the action was freshman
Chris Martin (Hagerstown, Maryland) who hit a two-run bomb to right, stretching the lead to six and chasing The Mount's starter.
With pressure off, Tolson dazzled on the mound by taking advantage of his fielders with six flyouts and seven groundouts in his five innings of work. The senior worked the zone, giving up just four hits in the game and no free passes to any Mountaineer batter.
The win was Tolson's first in nearly two years, the last coming on March 30, 2018 at Delaware State.
"It was a pleasure, Hollamon said. "Marty's done a great job for us the last two years and he finally got on board with a win and pitched really well."
The Hawks struggled with runners on as the game progressed, but were able to plate one more run in the second thanks to a Coleman solo home run. The hit gives Coleman the distinction of successfully reaching base in every game this season and having a hit in eight of nine contests.
"He's got some confidence now," Hollamon said. "Now he gets into the batter's box and doesn't feel like people can beat him. When he's in there and has that confidence he's in good shape."
Sophomore
Cory Poulsen (Bel Air, Maryland) entered the game in the sixth, allowing two hits in the inning but worked his way out with ease before closing it out in the seventh.
The Shore gets the weekend off before heading to the University of Delaware on Tuesday (March 3) afternoon at 3 p.m., looking to avenge an 8-2 loss in 2019.
