BALTIMORE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore has reached the point in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference season where many of the opponents they face from her on out are teams they have already gotten a look at this season. Saturday's (Feb. 8, 2 p.m.) contest at Morgan State (11-11, 7-2) will see them face off with a Bears squad that had their way inside in Princess Anne this season in a 55-44 win.
"It is starting to get into that type of competition where you are able to do a little bit more as far as scouting after already seeing teams," Hawks coach Fred Bathchelor said. "They pose some real challenges for us. Their two kids inside are very productive on the inside."
Senior guard Chelsea Mitchell is putting up 14.5 points and 9.3 rebounds to the Morgan, while teammate Daynye Redd is adding 12.9 points and 7.6 rebounds. The pair combined for 34 and 19 in the first meeting — just 12 days prior.
"Mitchell seems as though she probably could be MEAC Player of the Year after the first half of MEAAC play because of her energy and her motor and her skillset," Batchelor said. "I have watched her and they are doing so many different things and I think their kids have great instincts. And to me I think coach (Edward ) Davis is Coach of the Year after the first half. They haven't lost a game at home and it's a great opportunity for a team like us who haven't won a road game and don't have a signature win this season. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to go into Morgan.
"It's always a tough place to play, but this is an opportunity we need to take advantage of to like a flame under our season. I just don't think we are going to go out without do that."
The Hawks (4-16, 1-6 MEAC) will hope to garner some momentum to carry them into a Monday (Feb. 10) matchup at Coppin State (5 p.m.) as the second half of a Baltimore road swing.
Expect Eastern Shore to continue a recent trend of changing up the starting lineup as the coaches look to find a lineup that can help the team play well for 40 minutes.
