Box Score GREENSBORO, North Carolina — There was little answer by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team in a 9-4 loss on Sunday (March 8) against the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Scattered runs were scored but the Spartans bats outgunned the Hawks all weekend, sending The Shore home with four straight losses after a three-game win streak.
Quick hitting gave The Shore a 1-0 lead in the first with
Brian Cordell (Pasadena, Maryland) reaching on a two-out single before being driven in by
Marcus Brown (Silver Spring, Maryland) — Cordell was aided to second on a
Devynn Hancock (Salisbury, Maryland) hit by pitch.
Greensboro didn't take long to respond with a two-run first inning to dismiss the Hawks early gain and continued to hammer, tacking on two in the fourth and two in the fifth.
The Shore was able to gain some momentum with two runs in the sixth thanks to runs by Brown and
Chris Martin (Hagerstown, Maryland), driven in by
Tyler Woodward (Gaithersburg, Maryland) and
Avery Tunnell (Dover, Maryland).
Tunnell was able to grab his first hit and RBI of the season during the game.
Loaded bases for the Spartans in the bottom of the frame put the game much out of reach for the Hawks as Greensboro had three runners cross in the inning to put the game at 9-3.
Pinch hitting in the ninth,
Nick Roets (Charlotte, North Carolina) got on with a double and was driven in by Cordell with a two-out single but no rally would come, closing out the series for the Hawks.
After seven games on the road, The Shore returns for a 10-game stretch at home, starting on Wednesday (Mar 11) with a hot United States Naval Academy team coming to town, the first of a home-and-home with the Midshipmen.
