Hawks Fall To Coppin State

Eastern Shore Host Morgan State on Sunday

BALTIMORE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore fell to the Coppin State University Eagles on Friday night (October 15) via sweep inside the Physical Education Complex on the campus of Coppin State. The scores by set of the match were 15-25, 26-28 and 18-25.

"It was a hard fought battle," head coach Trevor Callarman said. "We had a few too many missed serves and errors to get the win tonight, but we look forward to our shot against them at home."

CSU opened the match in the first set with five straight points and forced the Hawks to take a timeout. The Eagles built on to that lead and finished the set on a 6-0 run to take the opening frame.

In the second set, the Hawks had a better showing. Sophomore Maya Hendricks and freshman Charlize Williams combined for a block to give the team a 13-12 lead halfway through the frame. Following a ball handling error by Coppin State, Maryland Eastern Shore held a 15-13 advantage with Hendricks on the service line. The Eagles responded with five straight points to lead 18-15.

The Shore trailed 23-19 late in the second set, but rallied to tie the score at 23 after four straight points. The two squads alternated the next six points to tie the score at 26. The Eagles would get two kills after that to take the frame.

In the final set, Eastern Shore jumped out to a 5-2 lead following a kill from Hendricks. CSU answered that with five straight points and never surrendered the lead again as they cruised to a win in the third set.

Hendricks finished with a game-high 11 kills and added nine digs and an ace as well. Senior Mauri Carver had another strong defensive effort at the net as she finished with four total blocks.

The Shore will be back on the court to face Morgan State on Sunday (October 17) at 2 p.m. inside the William P. Hytche Center.
