PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team dropped their Friday night (November 5) match to the Coppin State University Eagles in four sets. The scores by set were 26-24, 17-25, 10-25 and 9-25.
"This was a tough match for us tonight," head coach Trevor Callarman said. "The only thing we can do now is respond and be ready for Sunday."
In the opening set, CSU led 7-10 early on. The Hawks would respond and score five of the next six points and lead 12-11 after an ace from senior Stella Johnson.
Coppin State would tie the set on the next point and build a late 22-24 advantage. The Shore responded with four straight points to win the frame. Following a service error from the Eagles, junior Derionah Abner got a kill to tie the set. Senior Marina Cruz got a kill after that and a solo block by freshman Charlize Williams ended the set.
The two teams split the first 20 points in the second set and as the score was tied at 10. Coppin State would go on a 10-2 run after that to gain control of the frame and lead 12-20. Eastern Shore would not get closer than six for the rest of the set as CSU tied the match at one set apiece.
After intermission, Coppin State would keep their strong play going. They would go on to outscore The Shore 50-19 in the final two frame to win the match.
Cruz had a double-double for the Hawks with 10 kills and 12 digs. Defensively, Williams and senior Mauri Carver each had three total blocks, while senior Stella Johnson had a team-high 19 digs.
Maryland Eastern Shore will now play Morgan State on Sunday (November 7) in Baltimore. The first serve for the match will be at 1 p.m.
