PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore had two representatives on a list by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) recognizing Pioneers in Women's Sports. Maryland Eastern Shore is represented by former head bowling coach Sharon Brummell and the 2008 Hawks women's bowling team.

Brummell had a 14-year career as the Hawks' head bowling coach. She became the first African-American and woman to win a women's bowling national championship. The 2008 championship was also the first women's NCAA Division I title in any sport for an HBCU program. The two-time National Coach of the Year led The Shore to two additional national championships.

The 2008 women's bowling squad had a 4-2 win over Arkansas State in Omaha, Nebraska on April 12, 2008. The Hawks captured the NCAA Division I National Bowling Championship that day and became the first HBCU to win a women's NCAA Division I team championship. The squad was led by MEAC Hall of Famer Jessica Worsley.

The list, which is presented by Academy Sports+Outdoors, honored 27 individuals and one team. This year's recognition is part of the conference's year-long commemoration of the MEAC's 50th Anniversary and the recognition will likely become an annual endeavor to celebrate the impact that individuals have on women's sports in the conference.
