WASHINGTON, DC — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore saw their four match win streak end on Sunday (September 26) at Howard University as the Bison defeated the Hawks 3-0.
"After this weekend we know we have a super talented team and can come out and play some fire volleyball, but today we were flat on offense," head coach Trevor Callarman said. "We didn't have a great first or second contact so our offense wasn't clicking, but we know moving forward that if we can get that more consistent we'll have a better offensive team."
In the first set, the Hawks held an early lead at 10-8 after a service error from Howard. HU would respond and go on a run to eventually take the set 25-20.
The Hawks came out and held a lead in the middle of the second set at 14-11. The Bison countered with a five point run and took a 16-14 advantage and forced an Eastern Shore timeout. After the timeout, HU continued their run as they would eventually take set two 25-19.
In the third set, Eastern Shore led 5-3 after a block from senior Mauri Carver and junior Derionah Abner. Howard scored seven of the next eight points to take a 10-6 lead after that. The Bison continued their hot streak and built a 17-9 advantage. HU would continue their strong play and eventually took the final set 25-14.
Senior Stella Johnson had a game-high 11 digs and sophomore Jalynn Robinson finished the match with nine assists and three aces.
Maryland Eastern Shore will play their next match on Friday (October 1) at rival Delaware State.
"We have a couple days to prepare and get sharp again," Callarman said. "We know we can put together a good performance, so we have another shot on Friday to prove that we are tough in the conference."
