PRATTVILLE, Alabama — As the winter begins to turn into spring, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore golf teams are back on the links to resume their 2021-22 seasons.
Both squads were at the Alabama State University Spring Kickoff this past weekend (February 20-21) at the RTJ Golf Trail at Capitol Hill to compete for the first time this calendar year. The women's team finished fifth in the event out of six teams. The men completed the tournament in seventh out of eight teams in a competitive field where Eastern Shore was only 56 total strokes behind first place.
On the women's side, freshman Arria Gross had the best outing for the Hawks. She finished the tournament with a 189 over two rounds. Her second round score of 90 was the best round for any member of the squad in the event.
Senior Briahna Willis shot a 195 to have the second best score for the women's team. Samford won the women's side of the tournament after shooting a 647 as a team and having the top three individual scores come from their team.
Junior Thabang Moephuli turned in a top 20 finish in the event after shooting a 162 over two rounds. His second round 78 (+6) was the best round for any player for The Shore during the event.
Senior Brant Gillespie finished two spots behind Moephuli after shooting a 164. Western Illinois won the event on the men's side. Savannah State's Korbin Allan had the top individual score of the event as he shot a 147 (+3).
The men's team will be back in action March 13-15 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in the Bash at the Beach. The women's team will play their next event April 1-3 in the Prospect Bay Intercollegiate in Grasonville, Maryland.
