WILMINGTON, North Carolina — Facing one of the top pitching staffs in the nation on Sunday (March 13), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team had trouble on offense in two games versus the University of Wilmington Seahawks. UNCW came out on top in game one 8-0 and 8-1 in game two.
In game one, neither team scored in the first two innings. The Seahawks would break the game open in the bottom of the third by scoring four runs.
UNC Wilmington would get two more runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth to make the score 7-0. They would end the game in the sixth inning by scoring a run via a bases loaded walk to end the contest.
Freshman Nola Mountain and junior Tyanna Roberts had the team's only hits of the game in the first and second inning respectively.
Roberts got the squad out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game of the day. She did so by hitting an RBI double to left field to bring sophomore Tatum Kresley in to score.
The score stood at 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning. UNC Wilmington got a leadoff triple from Janel Gamache and that was the catalyst to the Seahawks scoring four runs in the frame. They would get another four runs in the sixth inning to go up 8-1 and closed the door in the seventh to secure their win.
Along with scoring the team's lone run, Kresley went 2-4 and stole a base in game two. Freshman Rebecca Miller went 1-2 with a walk in the game. Graduate student Nasya Goodman tossed a complete game with six strikeouts on the mound in game two.
Maryland Eastern Shore will now host Syracuse for a midweek doubleheader on Tuesday (March 15). The first game will begin at 1 p.m.
