PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland – After ten days off the diamond, the Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team will be heading to Washington, DC to take on George Washington University on Wednesday (March 16) at 3 p.m.
The Hawks (1-10) and Colonials (6-10) last met in 2019 with the Shore falling 15-3 in the game, moving to an all-time record of 3-20. It will be the first game of a home-and-home with George Washington, with game two coming in two weeks (March 30) at Perdue Stadium.
Hawks Hunting
The Shore won its first game in over two years just ten days ago before a break in the season action for midterms, with
Noah Covington winning his first game ever as a Hawk with a complete game against Radford. Currently the junior leads the team in most pitching statistics except strikeouts, which freshman
Caden Parker currently holds the high mark of 11.
Freshman
Alec Greenblatt will be getting his first start of the season, the sophomore has been relegated to bullpen work in the three games he has appeared in so far. In the last two games Greenblatt has worked he's gone 1.2 innings with three strikeouts and no earned runs.
The pen will be fully rested for the midweek game, but Greenblatt will look to put innings in as the Hawks host MEAC for Norfolk State in a four-game set starting on Friday.
At the plate, shortstop
Dillon Oxyer continues to be a monster, slashing .333/.395/.436 through ten games started. The graduate student was in conversation for MEAC player of the week for his damage done against Radford and carries a four-game hit streak into the matchup.
Switch-hitter
Derrick Mayes II has been phenomenal as well since being bumped to the lead-off spot in the lineup, stealing bases at-will, currently at a perfect five-for-five in his attempts. The junior also laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt against Radford where he drove in a run while still reaching first.
A large part of the Hawks success in the last series was second baseman
Luke Myers being an absolute rock defensively. The freshman made MLB-like plays against the Highlanders while also snagging his first two hits, including a double, and three runs while on the road.
Calculating the Colonials
George Washington is coming off of a win against a later opponent of the Hawks, University of Maryland – Baltimore County, shutting out the Retrievers 2-0 at home on Tuesday (March 15). The Colonials used three pitchers in the affair with a strong 7.2 inning start by Logan Koester and were led at the plate by lead-off man Myles Nicholson reaching base three times in four plate appearances.
The back end of the staff has been led by Trevor Kunci, appearing in nine of the Colonials games with a 3.38 ERA over 16 innings, striking out 17 along the way.
The Colonials have been led by utility-man Eddie Micheletti Jr. with a quality .293/.359/.431 line, but his current status is up in the air after being hit by a pitch in the first inning against UMBC. Shortstop Steve DiTomaso has also been phenomenal at the plate for George Washington, with 21 hits in 66 at-bats, although only two have been for extra bases.
Live stats will be provided by George Washington for the game and as always you can follow along with the action on Twitter via @eshawksbase.
