Winthrop Tops The Shore as Weather Ends the Game After Five Innings

Garcia, Oglesby Bring Power to the Plate against the Eagles

HUNTINGTON, West Virginia — On the final day of the Marshall Round Robin on Sunday (March 6), mother nature ended the University of Maryland Eastern Shore's softball game with the Winthrop University Eagles after five innings were played. WU was declared the winner after five innings as they led 7-3.

The Hawks were the home team in the contest and they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Tatum Kresley and freshman Nola Mountain began the frame with back to back singles. They would come across home plate to score after sophomore Julia Garcia hit a double to right center.

Winthrop responded with one run in the second inning and two in the third to take a 3-2 lead after three innings. They would get four more runs in the fifth inning to push their lead to five.

In the bottom of the fifth with two outs on the board, head coach Karla Powell called on Ah-Nayia Oglesby to pinch hit. The sophomore rewarded her coach by hitting her second homer of the season over the left field fence. Two batters later the inning ended and the game was called at that point.

Garcia was 1-2 with a walk and two RBIs in the contest. She had six RBIs over the weekend and raised her total to 14 for the season which is tops in the MEAC this season.

Maryland Eastern Shore will now travel to UNC Wilmington for a weekend series. The two teams will play doubleheaders on March 12 & 13.
