Hawks win four of five match in opening day of the Colonial Lanes Classic
 

HARAHAN, Louisiana - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore picked up four victories on their opening day of the season which included wins against Texas Southern, Alabama A&M, Tulane and Jackson State. The Hawks lone loss was to Stephen F. Austin in the opening match of the day.

 
"If we can go 4 and 1 throughout the season, we will be in good shape," said head coach Roger Petrin. "Having said that, I thought we could have done a better job of taking advantage of our opportunities today. We just left too many pins out there and need to be more consistent as we prepare for tomorrow's schedule."

 
After narrowly falling to SFA by a score of 989 to 982, the Hawks rallied to win out with a 901-877 decision over TSU, a 961-824 victory over A&M, a 976-832 triumph over TU and a 949-790 victory over JSU.

 
The Hawks enter Saturday's competition in sixth place overall. UMES totaled 4769 pins and an average of 190.8. North Carolina A&T currently leads the event with a 5260 pin total and an average of 210.4.

 
Petrin praised the play of Brooke Driver and Mariana Santos Rivero as the Hawks turn their focus to Saturday.

 
"I thought Brooke (Driver) went out and had one of the best performances of her collegiate career while Mariana remained consistent throughout the day to help lead us to success. They both came ready to bowl this week," Petrin said.

 
Driver's day included a 223 performance in the final match against Jackson State.

 
"As we go into the second day, we remain confident that our entire team will perform well against some of the top teams in the country," says Petrin. "I fully expect more consistent play from all of our ladies."

 
The teams will compete in a traditional bowling format on Saturday. Competition begins at 8:55 am.
