Seawell's career-night helps Hawks soar to 72-50 win at Wagner
STATEN ISLAND, New York – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks beat the Wagner Seahawks, 72-50, on Saturday as UMES forward
Ariana Seawell finished with a career-high scoring night.
With the victory, the Hawks are now 6-5 overall and off to their best start to a season since 2016. The Seahawks are now 2-7 on the year.
On their hunt for the first road win of the year, the Hawks jumped out to an 8-0 lead before a Wagner free throw put the Seahawks on the board at the 6:51 mark of the first quarter.
UMES held Wagner without a made field goal through the first six minutes of play as the Hawk lead ballooned to as many as 12 after Seawell basket in the paint by the 2:57 mark. Making her first start of the season, Seawell got off to an impressive start, going five of six from the field as UMES took a 26-11 lead into the second period.
UMES upped its lead to as many as 26 in the second period as Seawell reached a season-high 17 points with 4:48 left in the quarter. Behind the scoring of Seawell, the Hawks took a 45-24 lead at intermission as the Hawks hit 16 of 29 field goals (55.2%) while Wagner managed just four field goals and shot 18.2% from the field.
A slow start by the Hawks to open the third quarter allowed Wagner to cut the deficit down to 13 by the 4:46 mark. UMES would not allow the Seahawks to get any closer as the Hawks ended the third quarter with an 8-2 run to take a 57-38 lead into the fourth.
Point guard
Mya Thomas found Seawell on a pass through traffic for a three point play to highlight the early phases of the fourth quarter as UMES cruised to the 22-point road win.
Seawell became the first UMES player to score 30 or more points since January of 2019 (Ciani Byrom). The junior forward from the Bronx, New York made 11 of 16 fields and converted 10 of 12 free throws for a career-high 32 points along with seven rebounds, two blocks and one steal.
Led by Thomas' five assists, the Hawks recorded a season-high 19 assists in the victory.
The Hawks will be back on the road on Wednesday at Virginia Commonwealth University.
