VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore track and field squads had a solid showing at the 60
th Annual East Coast Classic on Friday, February 3. In the three-team meet several individuals took first and many more set personal records on the trip to Virginia.
On the men's side, the Hawks fared well in the 400m with
Ashane Beckford and
Janoi Brown taking the one and two spots, as well as
David Martin grabbing the top slot in the 800m.
Thrower
James Perkins took first in the shot put with a 14.93m toss – the senior has come in the top five of each meet he has competed in this season, including setting personal records in both the shot and weight throw last weekend at the Boston University John Terrier Classic.
"The meet was good for our team with a few of the seasons best performances and personal records being set," Perkins said. "Nobody wants to win as much as the team and I do, but we don't put pressure on ourselves, which helps and has shown in the results."
For the women, Lyric Kelly took third in the high jump while setting personal record of 1.47m; while
Mackenzi Evans,
Jazmine Thomas and
Malea Sharps swept the 200m – all coming in under 27 seconds.
The Hawks are just two weeks away from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships and until then, they'll be back to work on improving those marks.
"As a team we have to work on a few things," Perkins said. "That won't stop us from showing what we can do at the conference championships."
