Hawks travel to Texas for three matches


STEPHENVILLE, Texas – After a successful stay at home with wins over Gardner-Webb and Quinnipiac, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team is back on the road for three matches as part of the Dr. Pam Littleton Classic hosted by Tarleton State University.
 

UMES will face Texas Southern on Friday followed by Saturday matches against UC-Riverside and Tarleton State.

Hawk Stats heading into the weekend...
 

• After going 2-0 in last weekend's Benson Hawk Invitational, UMES is now at 5-4 overall under first year coach Vanessa Faircloth, which is the team's best start to a season since 2017.
   
• Grad student Derionah Abner led UMES offensively with a Hawk career high 18 kills against Gardner-Webb in a four-set win followed by an 11 kill performance in a three-set victory over Quinnipiac. On Tuesday, Abner was named the MEAC Offensive Player of the Week. Abner was also featured during the University's capital campaign initiative on Thursday night along with other prominent students and UMES alumni. As the team prepares for the weekend, Abner needs 18 kills to reach 500 since joining the program.
   
• UMES is one of two MEAC teams who are currently over .500 entering the weekend. Coppin State is 8-2 on the season.
   
• UMES currently ranks first in the MEAC in team hitting percentage (.244), kills (12.71) and assists (11.68).
   
• UMES junior Charlize Williams leads all MEAC players with a .434 hitting percentage.
