The Short Story: Despite a late push by the Hawks, the Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker in their MEAC opener to Morgan State at home on Saturday afternoon at the Hytche Center. Hal Chernoff, owner of Main Street Gym in Salisbury, served as an honorary coach for the Hawks as part of Hawks Community Day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two teams went back and forth with each other before a pair of free throws by Caché Wilson at 2:14 saw the Hawks take a 13-9 lead. Two more points from the line by Lainey Allen gave UMES their biggest lead of the quarter 15-9 before a back with 17 seconds left brought the Lady Bears back within four.
- The Hawks kept MSU at bay before the Lady Bears tied the score at 19-19 with 2:55 remaining in the half. Both teams would hit a basket with less than a minute left as they headed to the locker room all tied up at 21-21
- MSU scored the first four points of the second half before a 6-2 run by the Hawks tied the score at 27-27 with 5:43 left in the quarter. After Ariana Seawell made a pair of free throws, the Lady Bears went on a 7-0 run to take a five point lead with 38 seconds.
- Trailing by three going into the fourth, the Hawks took a one-point lead on a jumper by Ashanti Lynch with 4:06 left in the game. The Lady Bears would answer and take a five point lead before Seawell made a free throw with 14 seconds left to cut the UMES deficit to just two. A Lady Bear free throw with 13 seconds left put the visitors back up three. The Hawks had a shot to send the game into overtime, but missed as MSU escaped the Hytche Athletic Center with a 48-45 win.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Seawell scored 16 points for the second-straight game to lead all scorers while adding eight rebounds. She finished the game going 8-for-9 from the free throw line.
- Lynch also reached double figures with 11 points.
- Sedayjha Payne led MSU with 10 points while Laila Fair grabbed 14 rebounds for the Lady Bears
