HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
As the Hawks began their battle with Norfolk State University, the Spartans quickly took the lead, 8-1. UMES responded quickly, using great defense to tie the score. Anisa Dorlouis had six digs during the first set, and the Hawks continued to hustle hard to the very end of the set. Despite their efforts, Norfolk ultimately took the set.
The Maroon and Grey were fired up in the second set. Nkemjika Ikemefuna and Lilliana Montes scored big for the Hawks with six points each. The Spartans showed good defense during this set. However, nothing matched the determination the Hawks had to win this set.
Going into the third set, the Hawks showed some fatigue. NSU dominated, getting to almost 20 points before the Hawks reached 10.Â
Despite the Spartans starting off strong in the fourth set, the Hawks swiftly took the lead away from them. Ranyla Griggs began to find her rhythm again, gaining two more kills, and teammate Anisa Dorlouis added four more kills totaling her to 11 at the end of the fourth set. The teamwork from the Hawks led them to a victory in the fourth frame.
With two lead changes and five ties in the fifth set, both teams played hard to the end. However, Norfolk State came out on top, winning the fifth set with a score of 15-11 to clinch the match.
