UMES Falls to Howard in Straight Sets Despite Strong Effort

SUMMARY
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (9-13, 4-7 MEAC) fell to the Howard Bison (18-5, 11-0 MEAC) in straight sets on Sunday, Nov. 3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first set was a battle, with the Hawks starting strong, delivering three straight kills to pressure the Bison. UMES began to trail, losing the sideout battle as Howard scored five unanswered points to close the first set.

Lilliana Montes set the tone for the Hawks in the second set with the first kill, but the Bison responded with a 3-0 run. The Hawks fought back to tie the set at 3-3, led by solid play from Soleil Cotton. Despite keeping the score close, Howard took over the second set with a .345 team attack percentage, while the Hawks posted a set-low of -.045.

Back-to-back blocks by Anjola Omolewa gave the Hawks a two-point lead early in the third set, which saw 10 ties and five lead changes. However, Howard went on a 6-0 run midway through, gaining an edge over UMES with 15 kills to the Hawks' nine.

THE NUMBERS
  • Dorlouis posted a team-high 18 assists and 11 digs, marking her 15th double-double of the season and her third consecutive match with one.
  • Lilliana Montes led the Hawks with six kills, marking the second time in her career she led the team in this category.

Hawks volleyball will travel to the Carolinas to face South Carolina State on Friday, Nov. 8, and North Carolina Central on Sunday, Nov. 10.
