Hawks Softball Wins Twice on Day 2 of HBCU Invitational

GAME 1

The Short Story:
  It was all UMES softball in game one on Day 2 of the HBCU Invitational as the Hawks won big, 14-4 over Alabama A&M. Ameenah Ballenger and Kelsie Ekstrom led the off with a combined 9-10 at the plate.

THE GAME FACTS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Quick start for UMES with three runs in the top of the first with a double by Ekstrom and a triple by Ballenger. 
  • The Hawks added three more runs in the top of the second as Ballenger collected her second RBI on a single to third. The Bulldogs would cut the lead in half with three runs of their own in the bottom of second as the Hawks had a 6-3 lead going into the third.
  • Ekstrom collected a single in the top of the third, scoring two more runs to push the UMES lead back up to five, 8-3. 
  • After a scoreless fourth, a throwing error by AAMU allowed the ninth Hawk run to cross the plate. Ryan Merriwether would plate Ballenger in the top of the seventh to make it a 10-4 lead.
  • Ekstrom had her fifth hit of the game, a triple to center field that score two more runs before Ballenger hit an inside-the-park home run down the left field line to put the Hawks up for good, 14-4.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Eight different Hawks had a hit in the game, led by Ekstrom's five. Of the 19 UMES hits, six of them were extra base ones. 
  • Another mark for Ekstrom was a career-high five RBI.
  • The 14 runs were the most for the Hawks since a 15-3 win over South Carolina State on April 2, 2022.
  • Kylee Lehman got her first win of the season throwing a complete game allowing six hits whlie striking out five.

     
GAME 2

The Short Story:
  The Hawks once again led from start to finish in a 7-3 win over Alcorn State to finish Day 2 at the HBCU Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ekstrom picked up were she left off with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first that scored Jaycee Holt.
  • The Braves tied it up in the bottom of the inning on a single that score the runner from third.
  • The Hawks began to pull away in the second when Merriwether, who reached on one of three Alcorn State errors, crossed the plat on a wild pitch. Holt would add an RBI to her game totals, scoring Shanya Roberts from third after hitting a single that increased the UMES lead up to 3-1.
  • Ballenger added another to her day's totals in the third, giving the Hawks the 4-1 advantage. UMES added another run in the fourth before Alcorn cut the lead down to just tow on a pair of single, RBIs in the fourth.
  • Leading 5-3, Roberts and Nevaeh Terrell each collected RBIs in the fifth to provide UMES with th 7-3. A scoreless six and seventh inning for both leads saw the Hawks improve to 3-1 on the season with the win.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • UMES finished with eight stolen bases. After seven in the first game against AAMU, the Hawks have collected 15 in the past two games. 
  • The Braves led UMES in hits, 10-9, but three errors proved to be a large factor in the timely Hawk hits.
  • Ballenger earned her second win as many games. She finished with a complete game with three strikeouts.
UP NEXT
  • UMES finishes up their opening weekend with a single game against Jackson State on Sunday, February 18. Game time is scheduled for an early 10 am.
