Hawks Drop Final Game at HBCU Invitational

The Short Story:  The Hawks wrapped up action at the 2024 HBCU Invitational with a 11-3 loss to Jackson State on Sunday morning in Covington. UMES finished the tournament with a 3-2 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • As the visitor team in the game, the Hawks got on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Kelsie Ekstrom hit a single to second base that allowed Jaycee Holt to score from third. A throwing error on Ameenah Ballenger's at bat allowed her to reach third and push Ekstrom home for the 2-0 Hawk lead.
  • UMES was able to get out of jam in the bottom of the frame with the lead after allowing just one JSU run with bases loaded and one out.
  • The Tigers added five runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead 6-2. 
  • After a scoreless third, JSU put up four more runs in the bottom of the fourth increase their lead to 10-2. 
  • However, the Hawks would not quit and added a run on a Ballenger RBI that scored Holt from third, cutting the lead down to seven, 10-3. 
  • The Tigers would ad a run in the bottom of the inning to end the game on the eight-run rule, 11-3.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Holt finished the game going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring two of UMES' runs.
  • Ekstrom went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.
UP NEXT
  • UMES will have its home opener on this Thursday, February 22 when they host St. Peter's. The doubleheader time with the Peacock's is scheduled for 1 p.m.
  • All Hawk home game will take place at Harry S. Parker Athletic Complex in Salisbury, Md.
