Hawks lose 5-1 to North Carolina A&T on Sunday

Hawks get swept by North Carolina A&T with Sunday afternoon loss


SUMMARY

North Carolina A&T completed the sweep of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday with a 5-1 win over the Hawks in Greensboro, North Carolina.

HOW IT HAPPENED


A&T  pitcher Evan Hart kept the Hawks off the scoreboard for the first five innings of play, only allowing three hits and a walk while striking out four. While the Hawks remained without a run, the Aggie offense started quickly, scoring one run in each of the first three innings. 


The Aggies started a two-out rally in the first by notching a single, followed by a walk. After hitting the next batter loaded the bases, a wild pitch gave NC A&T its first run.  


In the second inning, JT Taylor hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score the runner to make the score 2-0. 


A Tre Williams homerun in the third put the Aggies up 3-0. 


The Hawks managed to get in the scoring column in the sixth inning as Derek Mays II hit his first homerun of the season against reliver Connor Blantz.


The Aggies scratched across two more insurance runs before the game's conclusion. In the seventh, NC A&T scored after a bases-loaded balk. In the eighth inning, Williams got his third hit when he hit an RBI double to up his team's lead to 5-1.
 

UMES had a chance to score in the eighth inning but stranded two runners in scoring position. 




BY THE NUMBERS


Mays was impressive for the Hawks with a 3-for-4 performance from the plate including his home run in the sixth inning.


The Hawk pitchers combined to walk seven batters compared to just one walk from NC A&T.


The Aggies starting pitching combined for 15 innings while striking out 15 and only allowing two runs throughout the weekend series.


It marks the second straight season the Aggies have opened the year by sweeping the Hawks to start the season 3-0.
