HOW IT HAPPENED

Austin Peay jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning and distanced itself from the Hawks in the fourth inning as the Governors struck for seven runs with two outs. An AP grand slam by Lyle Miller-Green provided the inning's first runs. Jon Jon Gazdar, Harrison Brown, and center fielder John Bay each had RBI after the home run as APSU built a 10-1 lead.

The Governors would tack on four more runs in the fifth to go up 14-1.

The Hawk offense made some noise in the sixth inning, scoring four runs and cutting the deficit to 14-5. A pair of Austin Peay errors led to the Hawks' first run and also helped extend the inning. Right fielder Jordan Peart provided a run with a single, center fielder Anders Brown pushed in a run when a pitch hit him, and designated hitter Derrick Mayes II provided the final run.

After two scoreless innings, AP's Harrison Brown doubled into the right-field corner to start the eighth. Bay followed with a walk, and Ambren Voitik moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Jayden Brown closed the game with a dying line drive that fell just in front of the UMES fielder for an RBI single.

BY THE NUMBERS

UMES first baseman Ulysses Luciano paced his team's offensive efforts with a 3-for-4 performance. Mayes and third baseman Quentin Smith also had two hits.

COMMENTS FROM COACH DANNY ACOSTA

"Austin Peay has a strong lineup, especially at the top of their batting order. I think Lyle Miller-Green is one of the best hitters we will face this year and they were able to distance themselves with a big fourth inning."

"We continue to make some costly errors and walks in crucial moments of the game. We need to clean up our mistakes to be competitive against a quality opponent like Austin Peay."

"I thought Mayes and Luciano have been able to put it together in their plate appearances through our first four games. Facing a team like Austin Peay is good preparation for us as we continue to focus on getting better each game."

NEXT UP
