Win Streak Hits Three as Hawks Down NC Central

The Short Story:  The University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball has run its win streak to three as the Hawks secured the 71-64 MEAC win over North Carolina Central on Saturday afternoon in Durham. Mya Thomas led all scorers and three Hawks in double-figures with 16 points. The win moves UMES into a tie for third in the MEAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first three minutes of the game saw both teams take multiple leads with the Hawks taking the lead for good at 6:53 on a Lainey Allen layup. The Eagles would keep it within five the rest of the quarter until a three by Chaniqwa Gilliam with 41 pushed it to seven, 24-17. 
  • UMES scored eight of the first 10 points of the second quarter to extend its lead to double-figures for the first time. An 8-1 run by NCCU would bring the Hawk lead down to four with 5:28 in the half. A pai rof free throws by Mahogany Lester with 1:30 put UMES up by 12 for the first time before settling in for the 10-point advantage as the teams headed to the locker room.
  • The third quarter saw the Eagles begin to chip away at the lead throughout the period with the Hawks leading by as many as 12 before NCCU pulling within four to end the quarter.
  • The Hawks held the home team scoreless through the first three and half minutes of the final quarter while scoring six, capped by a pair of Thomas free throws, putting their lead back up to 10. NCCU kept it close cutting their deficit down to five, but the Hawks answered each time with UMES taking the seven point win, 71-64

  • In addition to Thomas' 15, Zamara Haynes scored 13 and Jála Bannerman score 11.
  • Lester finished with a team-high nine rebounds along with her seven points. 
  • The three-game win streak is the second on this season after the Hawks wins over George Washington, UMBC, and Mount St. Mary's (Nov. 18-Nov.29).
