Hawks drop NEC opener to Norfolk State on Friday

HOW IT HAPPENED
 

After giving up two ground ball hits in the first inning, UMES walked in the opening run of the game. NSU added its second run in the second innding on a Kydese Queen RBI groundout. The Hawks were able to get in the run column in the bottom of the inning on a Riley Horner single to score Ryan Davis.
 

The Spartans took control in the third inning on a Justin Journette three run home run that hugged the left field foul pole. An RBI single by Swaroop Pujari and a two RBI double by Manny Jackson put the Spartans up 8-1 after three innings of play. Journette added to his RBI totals in the sixth inning with a double to score Jalen Jones. Jamal Ritter and Cam Curry each knocked in runs on singles to balloon the NSU lead to 11-1.
 

Ryan Davis provided a late highlight for the Hawks with a solo home run to left field in the eight inning for the second UMES run of the afternoon.
 

 
 
BY THE NUMBERS
 

NSU's Dalton Barham was the winning pitcher while giving up six hits ad an earned run in six innings of work.
 

UMES pitchers combined to give up 12 hits and 11 runs while walking 13 batters.
 
 
Ryan Davis recorded his first multi hit game for the Hawks this season including his home run in the eighth inning.
 

Journette finished with three hits for the Spartans with four RBI.
