Hawks Fall in Final Road Game of Regular Season to Norfolk State

The Short Story:  Cold shooting in the second and fourth quarters saw the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team fall to Norfolk State on Monday evening in Norfolk. The loss drops the Hawks to 14-14 overall and 7-6 in the MEAC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A jumper by Mahogany Lester with 5:33 on the clock in the first quarter saw the Hawks cut the Norfolk State lead down to just one. It was over two minutes later before either team added to the scoreboard with a free throw by the Spartans at 3:32. UMES responded with six points over the next minute and half and then another four in the final 1:11 of the period to take a 14-8 lead into the second quarter
  • The Hawks extended their lead to start the next period to 10 on a pair of free throws by Jála Bannerman at 8:27. The Spartans responded by outscoring UMES 16-3 over the rest of the half to take a 24-21 lead into the locker room break.
  • The third quarter was much more like the first for UMES and second for the NSU as the Spartans outscored the Hawks, but just by two points, 15-13. The run by the Hawks in the period included cutting the lead down to just one on a pair of free throws by Lester at 3:01.
  • The fourth saw the Hawks go cold from the floor again as the Spartans outscored UMES 13-6 in the period to pull away for the 52-40 win.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Lester led the Hawks with 12 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.
  • Ariana Seawell also reached double figures with 10 points. She also grabbed five rebounds. 
  • The Hawks led the Spartans in rebounds (39-37) and bench points (21-13),
