Navy rally dooms Hawks in 13-10 loss

SUMMARY

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks were unable to fully overcome a 9-run first inning and a late rally by Navy in Wednesday's 13-10 road loss.

THE SCORE

University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks - 10
Navy Midshipmen - 13

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hawks jumped out to an early 4-0 lead as Isaiah Beseris knocked in two runs with a double down the third base line. Later in the inning, an Anders Brown single to center field brought in two more UMES runs.

The early lead would be shortlived for the Hawks as pitching control issues along with a catcher interference call resulted in the first six Navy runs in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases loaded, a single by Zane Raba scored three more runs as Navy took a 9-4 lead after the opening inning.

The Hawks bounced back with a five run third inning. UMES benefitted on a Navy throwing error as Beseris came in to score. An flyout by Brown allowed Ulysses Luciano to cross homeplate followed by a sacrifice fly by Riley Horner to score Danny Sadler, Jr. Singles by Bronson Taylor and Beseris would drove in three more runs for the Hawks as they climbed back to take a 10-9 lead.

While the Hawk offense battled back to take the lead, pitcher Raymond Smith came into the game to provide a steady presence for UMES on the mound. Smith pitched 4.2 innings while allowing just one earned run.

A fielding error on a shallow fall ball in the sixth inning proved to be costly for UMES. The tieing run scored on the two-out error. The next Navy batter singled to drive in two more runs to give the Midshiipmen a 12-10 lead. Navy manafactured one more run in the seventh inning while the Hawk bats were quietted to just one hit over the final three innings in the loss.

THE NUMBERS

Navy scored 13 runs with nine hits in the game.

Isaiah Beseris led UMES from the plate with a 3-for-5 performance with a season-high four RBI.

After a poor start by Hawk pitching in the first inning, sophomore Raymond Smith came in relief and pitched a career-high 4.2 innings while giving up one earned run. Smith's previous career-high in innings pitched also came against Navy on April 26 of last season.
