UMES triple jumper Malachi Aiken advances to NCAA National Championships
Â
LEXINGTON, Kentucky – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore will be represented by Hawk triple jumper
Malachi Aiken at this upcoming week's NCAA Track and Field Championships.
Â
Aiken, who holds the school record in the triple jump, qualified for the national stage thanks to a leap of 15.77 meters in the NCAA East Regional Championships held at the University of Kentucky.
Â
"It is a great feeling to advance and compete," Aiken says. "I am proud to represent UMES and make history in my event. This year has been a great experience for me and I am looking forward to going to Oregon."
Â
Aiken's mark of 15.77 meters set the new school record in the outdoor triple jump. He becomes the first Hawk track and field athlete to qualify for the national stage since steeplechase runner Khalil Rmidi Kinini competed in 2017.
Â
The 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held on June 5 through June 8 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. The men's triple jump championships are scheduled to begin on Friday, June 7 at 6:20 pm.
