University of Maryland Eastern Shore announces national search for next head men's basketball coach

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has officially begun its search for next head men's basketball coach.

"Our national search for our next head men's basketball coach is currently underway. We expect to have an influx of qualified applicants. Our selection committee intends to move swiftly and thorughly in order to identify the next leader of Hawk men's basketball," says Vice President of Athletics & Recreation Tara A. Owens. "We emphasize finding a head coach with a focus on the well-being and success of our student-athletes. The next head coach will share in the aligned mindset and mission of the University to position our student-athletes to be successful in the community, classroom and competition."

The Hawks finished with a 9-20 overall mark this past season with a 4-10 record in MEAC play under former UMES coach Jason Crafton. Serving as the Hawks' head coach since 2019, Craftion had a winning percentage of .361 with 43 wins and 76 losses. The Hawks best season under Crafton came in 2022-23 when UMES finished with an 18-13 overall mark and a 9-5 ledger in the MEAC.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks compete as a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level intercollegiate athletic program. The university fields teams in 14 sports: women's volleyball, women's bowling, men's and women's golf, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor track & field, softball, baseball, and men's and women's outdoor track and field. The UMES volleyball, bowling, basketball, softball, and cross country teams compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). UMES golf and baseball currently play as members of the Northeast Conference (NEC). Track & field holds dual membership and compete in the MEAC as well as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). UMES has also announced the addition of men's volleyball which will begin competition in January of 2025.
