UMES freshman Max Osten finishes in second place to lead Hawks at HBCU Hall of Fame Invitational

STONE MOUNTAIN, Georgia - In the second tournament of the fall golf season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's golf program was paced by Canadian freshman Max Osten at the Thomas W. Dortch Jr. HBCU Hall of Fame Golf Invitational earlier this week.

Hosted by the Black College Golf Coaches Association at Stone Mountain Golf Club in Georgia, the tournament featured seven HBCU collegiate golf programs. Competing in his second collegiate golf tournament of his young career, Osten fired a two-over par 72 in the first round of competition and followed it up with a four-over 74 in Tuesday's final round for a stroke total of 146 and a tie for second place with Arkansas Pine Bluff's Timir Alalin and six strokes behind tournament winner Jules De Reu (UAPB). Michael Davis and Bryan Janocha tied for the second lowest UMES team scores this week. Davis recorded rounds of 76 and 83 for a total of 159. Janoch'a stroke total of 159 came with rounds of 81 and 78. Sophomore Kyle Smetiouk finished with a total of 162 (78-84) and Montaevious White rounded out the UMES scoring with a total count of 183 (94-89).

"I am proud of the way Max competed throughout the last few days," UMES head coach Jerel Walker said. "Max has shown the ability to go low and executed in tournament play this week. We are still trying to put everything together as a team and will continue to get better with a quick turnaround to play in Greenville (North Carolina) next week."

As a team, UMES finished with scores of 307 and 319 for a tournament count of 626.
