How It Happened
To begin the match, the Hawks started quickly by scoring seven of the first eight points, highlighted by kills from Rayah Howell and Lilliana Montes and service aces from Valeria Matias and Jocelyn Torres. Despite the early deficit, the visiting Bulldogs rallied to tie the match, 9-9, before closing the set on a 16-10 run to win the opening set by five.
Contrary to the first set, South Carolina State began quickly, generating 10 out of the first 15 points. Trailing by five, Maryland Eastern Shore, led by kills from Anjola Omolewa, Gabrielle McCoy, Montes, and Howell, battled back to take the lead with an 8-2 run. Even though the Bulldogs later usurped the lead, 18-15, the Maroon and Grey built an insurmountable lead, ending the second set on a 10-3 scoring run.
After South Carolina State pulled ahead again with a decisive win in set three, UMES sparked a rally in set four by scoring the first six points of the frame. Later on in the set, with the Hawks leading 17-13, UMES scored seven points in a row and eight of the last 11 points to force a fifth set.
Despite falling behind 7-5, the Maroon and Grey flipped momentum with a 6-2 run, highlighted by three kills from Malaysia Shaw. Although South Carolina State came back to tie the match, UMES cemented their fifth conference win with consecutive kills from Montes, Howell, and Omolewa.
