Hawks Power By Spartans 3-2, Outscore Norfolk State 40-12 in Final Two Sets

NORFOLK, Va. - The Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (9-14, 6-4) outlasted the Norfolk State Spartans (2-21, 1-9) at Gill Gymnasium.

How It Happened

The Hawks and Spartans began the opening set in a stalemate, tied 11-11. Norfolk State followed with a 7-2 scoring run. Trailing 18-13, the Maroon and Grey, highlighted by two service aces from Margarette Vasquez and three straight kills by Malaysia Shaw, then answered the home team by scoring six straight points. Later in the frame, tied 24-24, Norfolk State recorded a kill and a service ace to clinch set one.

UMES, led by two service aces from Karielys Melendez and once again two aces by Vasquez, began the second set on an 11-5 scoring run. Norfolk State then battled back to tie the match at 24-24 before UMES rattled off the last two points to win the second frame, 26-24.

In the third set, the Spartans opened the frame with a 6-0 run before UMES generated a 16-5 scoring surge to usurp momentum again. The Hawks amassed seven kills during the run, including three from Melendez and two from Rayah Howell. Despite UMES' lead, the Spartans finished the third set strong, ending the frame by scoring 14 of the final 16 points en route to taking the lead in the match again.

UMES controlled set four from the first whistle, jumping out to a 17-4 lead. Kate-Linh Eden set the tone with two early aces while Lilliana Montes sustained UMES' offensive barrage with three kills in the scoring run. The Hawks stayed hot down the stretch of the fourth frame, closing the set with a kill by Anjola Omolewa to force a fifth set.

The Maroon and Grey continued to roll in the fifth set, earning a dominant 15-5 victory. The middle blocker tandem of Omolewa and Montes served as the starter and finisher for the Hawk offense in set five, rattling off seven combined kills in a winning set-five effort.

The Numbers

  • The Hawks improve to 18-4 in five-set matches under Vanessa Faircloth

  • The Hawks created separation at the service line, out-serving the Spartans 19-11

  • Montes generated a team-high 14 kills on a team-high .684 attack percentage and a team-high four blocks 

  • Jayda Hutchins finished one kill shy of a triple-double, recording 21 assists, 11 digs, and nine kills

  • Valeria Matias paced the Hawks with 21 digs. This is her seventh match this season with 20 or more digs.

  • Eden tied with Hutchins for the team lead in assists with 21 while also adding five sets

  • Vasquez finished with a career-high four service aces

  • In the opening set, reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week Malaysia Shaw recorded five kills with an .833 attack percentage. Shaw finished the match with eight kills on a .500 attack percentage

  • Karielys Melendez finished a kill and a dig shy of a double-double, finishing with nine kills and nine digs while adding five service aces
