SUMMARY
The VMI Keydets defeated the UMES Hawks 15-0 on a rainy morning in Lexington, Virginia.
THE SCORE
Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks - 0
Virginia Military Institute Keydets - 15
(VMI wins series 3-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks struggled to generate any offense, amassing just two hits. The first hit of the day was from Quentin "Q" Smith and the second one came from Ansel Carson.
Defensively, the wet conditions were not ideal for the UMES pitching staff against VMI's "small ball" style. Of the 15 runs given up by the Hawks, only six of them were earned runs. Maryland Eastern Shore walked 7 batters and registered five hit by pitches as a staff. This factor paired with two errors on the field led to long innings in which UMES could not find a third out for a prolonged period of time.
THE NUMBERS
UMES totaled 0 runs on 2 hits and 2 errors while VMI totaled 15 runs on 14 hits and no errors.
Freshman pitcher Hunter Allen made his first career start, striking out four in his first outing.
Despite playing three games against VMI, none of the games have gone nine full innings due to either run rule, rain, or being the second leg of a doubleheader.
UP NEXT
With this result, the Hawks lose the four-game series against the Keydets. Despite that, the Hawks have a chance to salvage the series tomorrow with one final matchup against VMI. First pitch is set for 1 P.M. on Sunday.
