Blue Devils Sweep Hawks in Sunday Doubleheader

GAME 1

SUMMARY

ABERDEEN, MD. – The Central Connecticut State Blue Devils never trailed en route to a victory, 17-1, over the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks at Ripken Stadium

THE SCORE

Central Connecticut State - 17

Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks - 1

(Blue Devils Win Series 2-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a three run top of the first inning by the NEC-leading Blue Devils, Maryland Eastern Shore answered in the home-half of the first inning. With Ansel Carson in scoring position, Ryan Howe crushed a single to left center field to drive in Carson and get the Hawks on the board. Unfortunately for the Maroon and Grey, UMES' offense was not able to plate another run in this game despite getting five runners in scoring position in the first three frames. Central Connecticut State continued to stack runs, scoring three or more runs in each of the first four innings. Despite two scoreless relief innings by Austin McCabe, the Blue Devils cruised to a win, 17-1.

THE NUMBERS

The Hawks scored one run on 10 hits and four errors while the Blue Devils recorded 17 runs on 16 hits and no errors.

Ansel Carson finished 2-for-3, generating his tenth multi-hit game of the season.

Austin McCabe pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. This outing tied McCabe's career high for innings pitched and is his first scoreless outing of the season.

GAME 2

SUMMARY

The Central Connecticut State Blue Devils peppered 21 hits in their 16-4 victory over the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks, earning a series sweep.

THE SCORE

Central Connecticut State - 16

Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks - 4

(Blue Devils Win Series 3-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Through three innings of play, the Hawks and Blue Devils played in a back-and-forth slug fest. Similarly to game one of the doubleheader, Central Connecticut State raced out to a three-run lead in the opening inning. After a scoreless second inning by Justin Spencer on the mound, the Hawks capitalized on a scoring opportunity. Michael Blackiston powered a two-out, opposite field single to drive in both Ryan Davis and Ryan Howe to get the Maroon and Grey within a single run.

After the Blue Devils generated another run in the top of the third inning, the Hawks once again answered. Jason Brown hit a towering fly ball to left field to drive in Julian Jimenez on a sacrifice fly. At the end of the third inning, UMES trailed by one run, 4-3. Central Connecticut State then turned up the offensive dial, driving in seven combined runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Although the Hawks scored another run on an RBI double by Jonathan Gonzalez Perez in the fifth inning, Maryland Eastern Shore could not overcome the offensive barrage by the NEC-leading Blue Devils, falling to their opposition, 16-4.

THE NUMBERS

The Hawks finished with four runs on ten hits and three errors while the Blue Devils recorded 16 runs on 21 hits and one error.

Ryan Howe finished the game 1-for-3, extending his hit streak to nine straight games with a hit.

Jonathan Gonzalez Perez finished 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI double. Gonzalez has hits in seven of his last eight games.

Julian Jimenez finished 1-for-4 at the plate with a triple and two runs scored. Jimenez leads the team in triples with three on the season.

UP NEXT

With the doubleheader losses, the Hawks fall to 4-28 (3-15). Due to the upcoming Easter holiday, the Hawks will resume NEC play against Wagner on Thursday instead of the usual Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Staten Island, New York.
