How It Happened
American controlled the opening set, outhitting the Hawks .545 to .050 in the frame. Tied 7-7, the Eagles went on a 9-0 run to pull away, ultimately winning the first set 25-15.
American continued their attacking advantage into the second frame, outpacing UMES .344 to .143. Despite the Hawks having a lower efficiency, the Maroon and Grey had only two less kills, generating 12 kills in the set to the Eagles 14. Jayda Hutchins, Malaysia Shaw, Karielys Melendez, Rayah Howell, and Nkemjika Ikemefuna each registered two or more kills in the frame. Despite the improvement on offense, American finished the set scoring 13 of the final 18 points to clinch a 25-17 victory in set two.
The Hawks and Eagles played a competitive set three, tying 10 times during the frame. UMES outhit American in the final frame .289 to .286. The two teams finished even with 16 kills each and were just one off of each other in aces, blocks, and service aces.
