How It Happened
Montana State began the match on a 12-4 run. The Hawks fought back to get within one point, surviving three straight match points to put the score at 24-23. Ultimately, Montana State edged out UMES to take the opening frame.
The Hawks and Bobcats split the first 30 points of set two. Tied 15-15, Montana State pulled away by scoring 10 of the next 14 points to clinch a 25-19 win.
Trailing 12-7 in the third set, the Hawks usurped momentum, tying the match 15-15 by the middle of the frame. The two teams traded the lead three times throughout the rest of the set before the frame culminated in a set-clinching 6-2 run by UMES.
Highlighted by a season-high 11-0 run, Maryland Eastern Shore controlled the fourth set. Jayda Hutchins amassed three service aces and Karielys Melendez, Gabrielle McCoy, and Malaysia Shaw each registered a kill to sustain the scoring surge. After being tied 4-4, the Hawks never trailed in the frame again en route to forcing a fifth set.
Montana State restored their momentum in set five, racing out to a 14-9 advantage. The Hawks then proceeded to stave off five consecutive match points to tie the game. The Bobcats weathered the Hawks' comeback attempt, scoring the final two points to clinch the five-set victory.
