NEW CASTLE, Delaware – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore wrapped up its first tournament of the 2026 calendar year at the Northeast Classic.Â
The Hawks finished 23rd at the Delaware tournament after going 2-1 in Sunday's championship rounds, and 5-5 across the first two days of competition.Â
UMES went 2-3 in Day 1 Baker competition with a total pinfall of 4,591. The Hawks dropped a high scoring matchup against Arkansas State, 1,043-1,011, before bouncing back to two straight wins against Wilmington University (867-807) and Wright State (880-819). Though a strong start, UMES lost to McKendree (974-865) and Wichita State (1,082-968) in the final Friday matchups to finish the day in 22nd out of 36 teams.Â
During Saturday's five individual matchups, UMES rebounded to 3-2 with wins against Nebraska (935-923), Daemen (871-822) and Holy Family University (840-788). The Hawks dropped matches to Sacred Heart (964-930) and Vanderbilt (1,098-974).Â
Aaliyah Friend paced UMES in individual scores with a total pinfall of 1,026 and a single-game high of 223. Mariana Santos Rivero finished with 957 and a single-game high of 214 while Jayda Gordon finished with 900 and a high of 205. Mariane Almeida scored a total of 635 across four games, Sofia Tosto scored 553 across three games and Ara Pitts scored 479 across three.Â
The Hawks entered championship Sunday in 23rd and faced Central Missouri in the first round, dropping the best of seven Baker matchup 4-3. UMES improved its position after a second round win against MEAC opponent Morgan State, earning a 4-2 win. The position round was cut short for UMES as Central Missouri forfeited the final three games due to inclement weather impacting the team's travel. UMES earned the 4-3 win as a result.Â
