How It Happened
After yielding the first point, the Hawks never trailed again en route to a victory in the first set.
UMES, highlighted by kills from
Andre Mills,
Tavion Ford and
Joshua Hightower, built a 10-5 advantage to begin the set. A combination of Roberts Wesleyan service errors and a pair of kills from Ford and Hightower then anchored the Hawks in the middle of the set, allowing the maroon and grey to cruise to a 25-19 win in set one.
Although the
Redhawks began the second set with a 9-4 run, UMES answered by scoring 10 of the next 14 points to tie the match, 14-14. The Maroon and Grey subsequently took their first lead of the set, going on to build an 18-15 advantage. Roberts Wesleyan then rallied to tie the game, 20-20, before the Hawks, led by kills from Mills,
Tristan Rowley, and
Marcellus Owens, closed the frame with a 5-3 run to take the set.
UMES carried their momentum into the beginning of the third and final set, establishing a 9-2 lead behind two kills from Rowley and a service ace from
Chase Valentine. With the Hawks leading 12-5, the visiting
Redhawks sustained a 12-3 run to take the lead, 17-15. UMES, spurred on by two kills from
Joshua Hightower and Valentine, then usurped control of the match, going on a 9-3 run to put the Hawks at match point. Despite Roberts Wesleyan scoring three straight points, the Hawks finished the job with a final kill from Rowley to cement the straight sets victory.

- The Hawks levied a double-digit lead in kills against Roberts Wesleyan with 44 to the Redhawks' 33.Â
- UMES maintained a hitting percentage of 30.7% to Roberts Wesleyan's 20.2%.Â
- Kenyon Haynes reached 39 assists for the Hawks through the night. Haynes also recorded four digs through the effort.Â
- Mills led UMES in digs, though libero Jarrett Key recorded another five. Edward Piloton Jr added another four digs from the Hawks' duo of liberos.Â
- Marcellus Owens, Valentine, Mills and Hightower were each credited on a trio of blocks.Â
