Hawks win against Roberts Wesleyan, 3-1, in rematch

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks secured a second win from the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks at Hytche Center, 3-1, to sweep the visiting Redhawks.

How It Happened

The match kicked off with both teams trading points, but it was the Hawks who gained momentum early in the first set. Plays from Chase Valentine and Tristan Rowley helped carry the Hawks through a 3-0 run. The Hawks continued to put pressure on their opponents as the set moved along, going on a 4-0 run to take a 10-3 lead before allowing Roberts Wesleyan to get back on the board. UMES finished off the first set in a continuous trade of points as the Hawks capped a contested set to secure a 25-22 win. 

With the Redhawks committing service and attack errors throughout the second set, UMES got on the board early with momentum with a 4-0 run to take a 6-3 lead behind a pair of kills from Joshua Hightower and two straight service aces from Rowley. Though the Redhawks mounted a comeback effort and cut into the Hawks' lead, UMES responded with a 5-0 run consisting of kills and forcing attack errors from the Redhawks. As the set drew to a close, UMES scored three straight on service and attack errors from Roberts Wesleyan before Kenyon Haynes drilled down a kill to give UMES a 25-17 win in Set 2.

Although the Hawks led in the third set 14-9, the Redhawks managed to push for the late win. Kills from Andre Mills and Valentine gave UMES the advantage most of the time. However, the Maroon and Grey trailed 23-25 at the end of the frame.

UMES continued its momentum into the beginning of the fourth set, establishing a 3-1 lead thanks to service errors from the Redhawks and an ace from Rowley. The Redhawks made an effort to catch up toward the end, narrowing the gap to 20-19. To secure the victory for the Hawks, Jaxon Clark and Rowley each made crucial kills, while Hightower contributed with a key block as UMES finished Set 4 with a 25-20 win to close out the match.

The Numbers
 
  • The Hawks levied a double-digit lead in kills against Roberts Wesleyan with 53 to the Redhawks' 49.
  • Joshua Hightower hit double digits in kills with 12, Andre Mills with 11 and Chase Valentine with 10.
  • UMES maintained a hitting percentage of 30.1% to Roberts Wesleyan's 22.4%.
  • Kenyon Haynes reached 36 assists for the Hawks in the afternoon match. Haynes also recorded seven digs through the effort.
  • The UMES liberos totaled seven digs as Jarrett Key totaled six and Jordan Brockman another one.
  • On the defensive end, the Hawks totaled nine blocks to the Redhawks' two.
