HOW IT HAPPENED
The Keydets began the game by scoring seven runs across the first three innings, generating six of their seven runs on a solo home run, three-run double, and a two-run single. UMES then countered in the top of the fourth frame when Marco Davila scored a run on a bases-loaded double play and Jonathan Rodriguez slashed an RBI double to bring the Hawks back within five runs.
Leading 7-2, a five-run bottom of the fourth by VMI ballooned their advantage to 13-2. The Maroon and Grey tallied one final run in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single from Jonathan Gonzalez Perez before ultimately falling by ten runs in the series opener.
THE NUMBERS
The Hawks recorded three runs on seven hits and one error while the Keydets generated 13 runs on six hits and no errors
UMES pitching staff struck out nine batters while walking eight while VMI struck out seven batters and yielded a pair of walks
Aponte paced UMES in hits, going two-for-three at the plate. The senior first baseman leads the Hawks with seven hits on the season
Rodriguez finished 1-for-3 with an RBI double. This was Rodriguez' first RBI of the season
Gonzalez Perez went 1-for-4 with an RBI
Shane Stanley (two strikeouts) and Darrius Brown (three strikeouts) each recorded scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
