How It Happened
The opening set featured 11 tie scores and two lead changes. UMES, paced by two kills from Andre Mills and Tristan Rowley, began the game by scoring nine of the first 15 points. Trailing 9-6, D'Youville went on a 7-4 run to tie the game, 13-13. The Saints later pulled ahead 21-20 before the Hawks, highlighted by three more kills from Mills, closed the set on a 5-2 run to win the frame.
After falling behind 3-2 in the second set, two kills from Joshua Hightower helped the Hawks sustain a 6-2 scoring surge. UMES, highlighted by a trio of kills from Rowley, never trailed again in the frame, ending the set on a 13-5 run.
D'Youville responded with a wire-to-wire win in set three. Although the Saints led by as many as six points in the frame, UMES rallied to tie the match, 18-18. D'Youville flipped momentum back in their favor, scoring seven of the final 11 points in the set to take the third frame.
The Hawks recovered in the fourth set, building a 11-7 advantage to start the frame behind three kills from Rowley, two by Mills and one by Nikilas Blumenstock. Even though the Saints decreased the deficit to 18-17, UMES, spurred on by four kills from Hightower, amassed a 7-4 scoring run to clinch their fourth straight victory.
The Numbers
- Tristan Rowley, Joshua Hightower and Andre Mills each reached double digit kills in the win with 17, 15 and 14 kills, respectively.
- As a team, UMES notched 62 kills to D'Youville's 47.
- While UMES held the advantage in hitting percentage at 41.6% to the Saints' 32.6%, the Hawks committed 17 service errors to D'Youville's 10.
- Each of the Hawks' setters, Kenyon Haynes and Curtis Tom, each recorded 27 assists.
- UMES liberos Jordan Brockman and Edward Piloton Jr totaled five digs between the pair.
