Carson’s grand slam and Torres’ five shut out innings lead Hawks to 9-6 victory over Stonehill

SUMMARY

A go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning by Ansel Carson led the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks to a six-run comeback victory over the Stonehill Skyhawks, 9-6, in the series finale at Hawk Stadium in Princess Anne, MD.

THE SCORE

Stonehill Skyhawks (3-12, 2-1) - 6

Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (2-14, 1-5) - 9

(Stonehill wins series 2-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Stonehill began the game with a five-run first inning. After holding the Hawks scoreless in the bottom of the first, the Skyhawks tacked on another run in the top of the second to go ahead 6-0.

From the bottom of the second inning to the end of the contest, UMES outscored Stonehill 9-0. Henry Clausell scored on an error in the bottom of the second to get the Hawks on the board. The Maroon and Grey followed up with an RBI singles from Darrius Brown and Ansel Carson and a two-RBI double from Jonathan Gonzalez Perez in the next three at bats to bring the score to 6-5.

Pitching and defense controlled the middle innings. Starting pitcher Cade Williams threw scoreless frames in the third and fourth innings in his four-inning outing while relief pitcher Esteban Torres spun five shut out innings out of the bullpen.

The strong pitching gave an opportunity for the Hawk offense to break through in the eighth inning. With the bases loaded on a full count, Ansel Carson slammed a go-ahead grand slam over the left field fence to give UMES their first lead of the game 9-6.

Torres then closed the game in the top of the ninth, icing the first conference victory of the season for UMES.
