Gonzalez Perez sets modern single-season home run mark, Hawks fall to Wagner 11-6

SUMMARY

Despite a record-breaking two-homer game from Jonathan Gonzalez Perez, the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks fell 11-6 to the Wagner Seahawks on Friday afternoon at Hawk Stadium.

THE SCORE

Wagner Seahawks (19-19, 15-7) - 11

Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (7-29, 6-16) - 6

HOW IT HAPPENED

After five scoreless innings from Esteban Torres in his start, the Seahawks took the lead against the UMES bullpen with a solo homer in the sixth. The Hawks then tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Diego Aponte.

Tied 1-1, Wagner tallied ten runs in the top of the seventh to take a commanding lead. Despite the deficit, the Hawks, spurred on by a sacrifice fly from Bronson Taylor and a two-run homer from Gonzalez Perez, rallied to score three in the seventh.

In the bottom of the eighth, Jonathan Rodriguez scored after Diego Guerrero doubled and got hung up between second and third and traded an out for a run.

Trailing 11-5 in the ninth, UMES amassed one final run on Gonzalez Perez's 12th home run of the season, which set a modern record for home runs in a single season by any Hawk since at least 1991. Despite the milestone, Wagner collected the final out to clinch a series-opening win.
