G. Jamal Brown is entering his thirteenth season as a basketball coach on the Division I level and his fifth as the Associate Head Coach at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Brown[apos]s primary responsibilities include scouting, recruiting and bench coaching. He has helped recruit many players that have received conference accolades and awards in his short time at UMES. Brown brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program. His coaching career started at his alma mater, South Carolina State University, where he was a standout player and a part of the 1996 MEAC Championship team that played Kansas University in the NCAA tournament. While at South Carolina State University as an Assistant Coach the men[apos]s basketball team won three MEAC Tournament Championships (1998, 2000 and 2003) and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. In 2003 Brown moved on to Tennessee State University where he was named the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. He served in that capacity for three seasons and helped Tennessee State men[apos]s basketball team to be a major player in the Ohio Valley Conference. Brown then returned to South Carolina State to fill the head coaching roll for the 2006-2007 season before joining UMES. Brown has gained a reputation as a highly successful recruiter. He has helped in recruiting several players that have garnered conference honors. A native of North Charleston, S.C., Brown graduated from North Charleston High School and graduated from South Carolina State University in 1996 with a bachelor[apos]s degree in business marketing. Born on February 23, 1974, Brown has been married to the former Lola Green for the last nine years. They have one child, Gilbert Jamal, II, who is eight years old. Brown is an active member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, The Black Coaches and Administrators and Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc.
