Princess Anne, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball played its only exhibition game of the season with a 102-97 victory over NWBL Elite Travel East Coast Team. The Lady Hawks were down by eight points (49-57) in the first half, but put the game away in the second half, by outscoring Elite 53-43 to win the game.
LaToshia Bailey led the team with 23 points on seven-of-13 shooting and eleven total rebounds. She was followed by teammates Octavia Thompson with 22 points and six rebounds and Laconia Hatcher with 21 points and four rebounds. Tiffany Winkfield, who, along with Bailey, had a double-double for the game, grabbed 14 defensive rebounds and 12 points to help her team defeat the NWBL. The Hawks' defense helped cause 23 turnovers and they finished with 12 steals.
"The ladies played hard tonight," said Head Coach Surina Dixon. "Even though they were down by eight points after the first half, we had greater intensity in the second half that allowed them to come back and play tough to win this game."
Ticha Rohelle for NWBL led all scores with 42 points. Star Jefferson had nine total rebounds to lead the Elite and added five points. Shala Johnson had 18 points.
The Lady Hawks will travel next to the University of Memphis on November 21 at 7:00 p.m. They will travel on to play Arkansas Pine Bluff on November 23 at 5:00 p.m.
