Princess Anne, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Women's Basketball Team had their season opener on Friday against the University of Memphis. The Lady Hawks had three players in double figures but fell to a tough Memphis squad by an 89-63 final. Tiffany Winkfield led UMES with 13 points and seven rebounds while Octavia Thompson added 14 points and LaToshia Bailey had 11.
Tiffany Winkfield gave UMES a 12-10 lead early in the game, but was unable to hold it as Memphis' Victoria Crawford led the Lady Tigers on a 12-0 run at the 13:19 mark. UMES had the lead later in the game to five at 34-29 with 3:59 remaining and Memphis came back closed the half on a 14-4 run.
The Lady Tigers were led by Victoria Crawford who scored her game-high 23 points, six rebounds, and was perfect from the free throw line hitting all 10 of her attempts. Three of her teammates also scored double figures. Raven Rogers had 13 points and six rebounds, Princess Swilley had 12 points and Tamika Butler scored ten.
The Lady Hawks next game is against the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff on November 23 at 4:00 p.m.
