Towson, MD - The Lady Hawks of UMES (2-4) fell to the Towson University Tigers (5-1) by a score of 92-67 on Saturday at the Towson Center. The loss was the third in a row for UMES and the fourth win in a row for Towson, which now leads the series 8-0.
UMES placed three scorers in double figures with Jamilia Griffith scoring 14, Rachel Goodwin adding 11, and Laconia Hatcher knocking in ten.
The Tigers took control early in the first half as they built up a 7-2 lead in the first three minutes. Sophomore guard Kacy O'Brien and sophomore forward Tina Hopkins then led Towson on a 14-4 run to put the Tigers ahead 23-12 with 8:24 remaining in the half. The Hawks made an attempt to get back in the game as juniors Jamila Griffith and Laconia Hatcher put up a put up a pair of baskets, but the Tigers responded with a 9-0 run over the next four minutes to amass a 34-16 advantage with 2:59 left before haltime.
Freshman forward Kelly Robinson gave the Tigers a 44-29 lead just 3:50 into the second half as she hit two three-point baskets in a row. UMES came to within 51-40 with 13:06 on the clock as Tiffany Winkfield sank a pair of free throws and then scored on a fast break, but Towson then pulled away and secured a 60-40 lead with 11:23 minutes of action left to play.
For the game the Towson shot 76 percent from the line and hit just over 54 percent from the field. Six Tiger players scored in double figures. O'Brien led a balanced Tiger attack with 20 points, eight rebounds and three assists, while Hopkins added a her first career double double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
UMES will take the holiday off as they prepare for Delaware State in their home opener on January 3, 2004. With the loss, the Lady Hawks ended a six-game road trip to start the season. The ladies have not played at the Hytche Center since an exhibition contest on November 15th.
