BROOKLYN, NY - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks (2-3) gave the St. Francis College Terriers (1-3) their first win of the season tonight in a 56-48 road contest. Despite the loss, Tiffany Winkfield recorded her fourth consecutive double double, netting 17 points and snatching down 14 rebounds.
Rachael Goodwin also scored nine points in the outing but overall the Lady Hawks were held to just 26.2 % from the field (6-28). The team's leading scorer, Octavia Thompson, was held to just six points. No one shot strongly as the Terriers only managed 32.1 % from the field for the game and 15.4 % in the second half.
Despite the all-around tough shooting night St. Francis played a strong first half, leading by 17 points at the break. Natasha Green, who came off the bench with 9 minutes to go in the half, sparked a Terrier run where she scored 10 of the team's 19 points and grabbed four boards to end the half.
The Lady Hawks began a comeback in the second half. There was three minutes to go in the game when UMES cut the lead to six points on a pair of made free throws by Laconia Hatcher. The Terriers free throw shooting however maintained the lead as they went 5-for-8 from the line in the game's closing minutes.
"We showed some don't quit signs in the second half," said Head Coach Surina Dixon. "The difference was our poor shooting, we couldn't make shots tonight and that was what did us in," she added.
For St. Francis, senior Brittiny Porter added 9 points and six rebounds in the contest, as teammate Caitlin O'Malley had a team-high 9 rebounds.
The Lady Hawks will take some time off and prepare for Towson as they travel to the home of the Tigers in Towson, MD on December 20th at 2:00 pm.
