Greensboro, NC - Laconia "Cuda" Hatcher led the Lady Hawks with 16 points, keyed by 14-of-21 shooting from the foul line. LaToshia Bailey added 13 points and a team high 15 rebounds. Tiffany Winkfield added seven points and 13 rebounds. Jamila Griffith had 10 boards. UMES had a 61-40 rebounding edge, including a 35-20 edge on the defensive glass, but could not overcome 32 turnovers, which led to 30 N.C. A&T points.
Camille Akins turned in a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead N.C. A&T (5-8, 2-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) to a 68-61 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore (2-7, 0-3) in women's basketball action at Corbett Sports Center.
Akins broke open a close game with a three-point play to give the Lady Aggies a 48-40 lead with nine minutes left in the contest. She added a layup, then converted a steal into a another layup, then hit a third layup, and capped off a 14-4 run with two free throws for a 59-44 Lady Aggie advantage with 3:11 to play. The Lady Hawks got to within six on two occasions, but N.C. A&T made seven of 11 foul shots down the stretch to earn their fourth victory in five games. The win may prove costly for N.C. A&T, as point guard and leading scorer Shareka Glover went down with an injury at the 10:22 mark of the second half and did not return. Glover scored 12 points with six assists and three steals before her injury. Yanumbe Sherman added 10 points, while Tia Richardson scored eight points and grabbed a team high nine rebounds.
The Lady Hawks look to grab their first MEAC win of the year on Monday night at 5:30 pm at the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State University.
